When it comes to AI usage, the question isn’t so much if it will grow more pervasive, but the form that AI will take. Until now attention has focused on large language models (LLMs) running in the cloud.
However, AI researchers are coming to believe that small language models (SML) are the future, particularly as more enterprises embrace agentic AI systems. Some of these benefits include:
- Cost and resource efficiency
- Privacy, sovereignty and security
- Latency and performance
- Accuracy and specialisation
Shifting to SLMs will, however, require a change in the way organisations do AI. This puts the impetus on enterprises to reevaluate their device fleets, harnessing solutions like HP’s Workforce Experience Platform (WXP) to isolate devices in need of updating or upgrading and ensure that workers have access to the AI capabilities they need.
